Conference Sessions


Fundraising - This session will cover fundraising 101, making a case for support and identifying potential donors.

Facilitation skills - This session will explore various ways on how to facilitate a UWC programme such as through empowering participants and paying attention to the hidden curriculum. In addition, you will practice some challenging facilitation situations and consider how to train your course facilitators effectively.

Financial management - This session will provide tips on building a budget, managing accounts and using a financial aid calculator for needs-based scholarships.

Curriculum development - Here, you will explore the why of UWC short courses and share ideas on what learning is and what outcomes to strive for.

Alumni engagement and communications - This session will provide tools for short course alumni engagement and updates on the UWC Hub. You will also get an understanding of where UWC alums sit in the UWC community. In addition, this session will cover information on UWC branding and effective communications tips such as the use of social media.

Building an effective team - This session will allow participants engage in a kinesthetic activity that explores different leadership styles that support short course leaders in building an effective diverse staff team. Participants will identify their preferred leadership style and discuss their strengths and weakness. Participants will also understand how to navigate contrasting leadership styles and how to build an effective team that consist of multiple styles.

Risk Management and Safety - In this session you will look into how to ensure safety at your short course and manage risks for specific activities. This session will also cover UWC's Common Standards for Safeguarding and how this needs to be implemented at your course.

Resource Platform Tour - You will be taken through the new short course resource platform to see how to navigate and source needed information for your short course. Feedback on how to make the platform better will also be sought during this session.

Logistics and Compliance - In this session various operational and logistical elements to successfully run a short course will be covered such as employing the right suppliers and getting the right insurance.

Outdoor Learning - This session will look into how to link your short course content to outdoor activities seamlessly and safely while providing appropriate levels of challenge for the participants.

Global Recruitment- This session will be an opportunity to define a ‘Short Course Participant Profile’ as well as provide ideas on how to identify ‘What the ideal Short Course participant recruitment should look like’. Participants are encouraged to bring ideas to the table, and work collaboratively to address current issues and suggest potential solutions to achieve a fair and transparent recruitment process.
